How Brief handles your information
1. Overview
Brief provides a document-understanding service that uses automated analysis to help users understand the structure and apparent meaning of uploaded legal documents. This Privacy Notice describes what information is collected when you use the service, how it is used, and how it is protected. By using the service, you agree to the practices described here. This Notice applies to briefme.site and all associated subdomains.
2. Information We Collect
We collect information in the following categories: (a) Documents you upload — the content of legal documents you submit for analysis. (b) Email addresses — collected when you provide your email to receive your Brief report or when you initiate a transaction. (c) Payment and transaction metadata — billing details processed by Stripe, plus transaction records including amount, date, and payment identifiers. We do not receive or store your full card number. (d) Generated Brief reports — the structured analysis output produced from your submitted document. (e) Communications — if you contact us by email, we retain that correspondence. (f) Usage and session data — standard information including IP address, browser type, pages visited, timestamps, and session identifiers necessary for the service to function.
3. How Your Information Is Used
Information is collected and used for the following purposes: (a) To provide the requested Brief service — processing your uploaded document through automated analysis and generating a structured, plain-English Brief report. (b) To deliver your Brief report — by on-screen display, downloadable file, and email. (c) To process payments through Stripe and send payment receipts. (d) To provide customer support — responding to inquiries, troubleshooting issues, and maintaining service quality. (e) To maintain operational reliability, security, and system integrity — including abuse prevention, fraud detection, and internal record-keeping. (f) To send optional product updates and legal document guides — only when you have affirmatively opted in through the consent checkbox. These marketing communications are separate from the transactional emails required to deliver the service.
4. AI Processing
Brief uses automated systems, including natural language processing and large language model technologies, to extract, structure, and interpret the content of uploaded documents. These systems process document text to produce the plain-English understanding provided in your Brief report. Processing is conducted through third-party AI infrastructure providers that are subject to contractual data protection obligations. Document content processed through these systems is handled in accordance with the data retention practices described in Section 7.
5. Email Communications
Brief distinguishes between two categories of email: (a) Transactional and service emails — These include Brief report delivery, payment receipts, and support-related correspondence. These emails are automatic and necessary to fulfill the service you have requested. (b) Marketing and product-update emails — These include occasional legal document guides, product announcements, and related resources. These emails are optional and are sent only when you have affirmatively opted in by checking the consent box during the upload or intake process. You may withdraw consent at any time by contacting hello@briefme.site or using the unsubscribe link included in each marketing email.
6. Payment Processing
Payment is handled by Stripe, Inc. When you submit a payment, your card details are entered directly into Stripe's secure form and are never transmitted to or stored by Brief. Stripe's privacy policy governs how your payment information is handled. Brief retains transaction metadata (amount, date, payment identifiers) for accounting, operational, and dispute-resolution purposes.
7. Data Retention
Documents, generated Brief reports, and associated metadata may be retained for a period reasonably necessary to fulfill the operational purposes described in this Notice — including service delivery, customer support, security monitoring, fraud prevention, and system reliability. Transaction records are retained for accounting and legal compliance purposes. Server logs are retained for up to 90 days. Email correspondence is retained for as long as reasonably necessary to address the relevant inquiry or relationship. When information is no longer needed for these purposes, it is deleted or de-identified in accordance with our operational practices.
8. Third-Party Service Providers
We use the following categories of third-party processors to operate the service: (a) Payment processing — Stripe, Inc. (b) AI language processing — infrastructure providers used to generate the plain-English analysis of submitted documents. (c) Hosting and infrastructure — cloud hosting services that store and serve the application. (d) Email delivery — services used to transmit transactional and optional marketing emails. Each provider processes data only to the extent necessary to provide their specific function and is subject to appropriate data protection obligations.
9. Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell, license, or rent your personal information or document content to third parties. We do not use your document content to train AI models. Information may be disclosed: (a) to service providers as described in Section 8, solely for the purpose of operating the service; (b) if required by applicable law, regulation, or legal process; (c) to protect the rights, property, or safety of Brief, its users, or the public; and (d) in connection with a business transfer, merger, or acquisition, subject to standard confidentiality obligations.
10. Cookies and Tracking
Brief uses session-based technical cookies necessary to operate the service — for example, to maintain your session as you move through the upload and analysis workflow. We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party behavioral analytics. Standard web server logs may be used in aggregate to understand usage patterns and maintain system performance.
11. Your Rights
You may contact us to request access to personal information we hold about you, to request correction of inaccurate information, or to request deletion of your information where we are not legally required to retain it. Requests should be sent to hello@briefme.site. We will respond within 30 days.
12. Children
The service is not directed to individuals under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors. If you believe a minor has submitted information through the service, please contact us immediately.
13. Changes to This Notice
This Privacy Notice may be updated periodically to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. The effective date shown at the bottom of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the service after any update constitutes acceptance of the revised Notice.
